Professional baseball in Japan resumed in 1946, after World War II and when Japan was under occupation by the United States military led by Gen. Douglas MacArthur. The Giants (or "Kyojin") were Japan's oldest and most important professional club. The Giants finished second in '48, five games behind the Nankai Hawks.
